News From St. Blaise

St Blaise Church Joining With Our Neighbours

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL PARISHES IN THE DAMASCUS GROUP (Drayton, Appleford, Milton, Sutton Courtenay and Steventon)
After extensive discussion and deliberation, and consultation at our APCMs, the five PCCs of the DAMASCUS Group have voted in favour of moving from a Group Ministry to a Single Parish.  The DAMASCUS Group Council endorsed this on Wednesday 13 July.

This proposal will now be taken through Abingdon Deanery Synod for a draft scheme to be drawn up and presented to the Archdeaconry Mission and Pastoral Committee.  There will be a two-stage formal consultation process, which allows for comments and feedback on the scheme.  The Churchwardens, PCCs and Clergy will be involved in the drawing up of the scheme so that we can ensure it works for us.  We believe that forming a Single Parish is the best option for the mission, growth and pastoral reorganisation of our parishes.  This is an exciting opportunity which, we believe, will enable more effective mission to our rapidly growing communities and help ensure the ongoing financial viability of our churches and ensure better clergy provision across all the parishes.  If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to talk to the churchwardens, Joy Browning and/or Nicola Turner.

This structure offers security for the church in Milton and will mean there will be three clergy (one full time and two part time) supporting the five churches of the DAMASCUS group. Now the five churches have made this decision the Diocese will begin to progress the appointment of a priest to replace Colin Patching. This is likely to take quite a few more months yet, but we can expect the post to be advertised within a few months. Some of you may have read the notice in the church porch from Bishop Colin (Bishop of Dorchester) that says the post has been suspended for five years. This does not prevent the Diocese filling the post, it just means the person appointed will be appointed as Priest-in- Charge until the Diocese lifts the suspension of the living. We expect the post to have been filled before next summer.

Ride and Stride - Saturday 10 September

This is the 31st Ride and Stride to raise money to help preserve our local churches. Cyclists and walkers raise money by being sponsored to visit as many churches in their area, or outside it for the really keen, and if you start from St Blaise 50% of the money raised will go towards our own church. I have a list of participating churches and sponsorship forms so if you would like to take part please contact me on 835671or e-mail anne.brownson@btinternet.com This is a great way to keep fit and help maintain an important part of our history. Every church will have a ‘welcomer’, and many will have refreshments, so if you would like to help but are not a cyclist or a walker and are willing to spend an hour sitting in St Blaise meeting and signing people in please contact me as above. The Church will be open from 10am until 6pm and it would help to let me know which hourly slot would suit you best.
